The Center Will Hold Brings Writing Center Theory into New Century

Joyce Kinkead’s position as vice provost for Undergraduate Studies and Research hasn't slowed her down. Kinkead teamed up with Michael Pemberton, an associate professor of writing and linguistics at Georgia Southern University, to compile a major volume of essays on the signal issues of scholarship that have established the writing center field and that the field must successfully address in the coming decade.

"The Center Will Hold: Critical Perspectives on Writing Center Scholarship uses the past as a springboard to make a major contribution to writing center scholarship," said Michael Spooner, director of Utah State University Press, which published the collection. "But it looks to the future."

"Writing centers are facing new institutional, demographic and financial challenges in this new century," Spooner said. "In order to hold and extend their contribution to research, teaching and service, they must continuously address those challenges."

"The Center Will Hold is a carefully conceived and thought-provoking collection of essays that anyone interested in writing center theory and practice will want to read," said Oregon State professor Lisa Ede.

"A collection that suggests a new agenda for research and teaching in writing centers, The Center Will Hold signals a turn toward the future in writing center scholarship," Spooner said. "It belongs on the bookshelf of every writing center and will be used with graduate students and in tutor training seminars for years to come."
