The Caine School of the Arts Opens Orchestra Season With "Youthful Firsts"

Orchestral music is in the spotlight Oct. 8 at Utah State University with a concert presented by the Caine School of the Arts and featuring the USU Symphony Orchestra, based in the Department of Music.

In a concert titled “Youthful Firsts,” the orchestra will present two early works by Haydn and Beethoven. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center (approximately 1110 E. 610 North, Logan).

Tickets are $8 and available at the Caine School of the Arts Box Office or calling (435) 797-8022. USU students with valid ID are admitted free.

Faculty soloist Steven Park joins the orchestra for Haydn’s Horn Concerto No. 1, and the orchestra will conclude the program with Beethoven’s First Symphony.

“I am looking forward to accompanying Mr. Park on the Haydn,” said orchestra director Sergio Bernal. “The French horn is an extremely difficult instrument. Mr. Park is a wonderful soloist and goes far beyond the music’s technical demands to bring to life this ingenious work.”

Bernal is pleased with the students’ work in the Beethoven selection.

“In his nine symphonies, Beethoven stretched the genre to its limits,” Bernal said. “From the opening chord, the First presents all kinds of innovations that challenge listeners and players still today. The orchestra is doing a fantastic job with the piece, bringing out its exquisite details and its powerful drive.”

Bernal said programming the Beethoven work for the concert goes in tandem with the Beethoven Cycle presented by the Fry Street Quartet Oct. 2-4 and 9-11.

“Presenting the complete Beethoven quartets in two consecutive weekends is an incredible feat, and an event that no one should miss,” Bernal said. “Even though the orchestra is not playing all of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, we will celebrate his genius by presenting his first symphony next week and his last in the spring.”
