Telephone Scam Involves USU Police Phone Number

The Utah State University Police Department has been alerted that people from various areas around the United States, including the Logan area, have been receiving frequent calls from the USU Police Department’s phone number, 435-797-1939. The phone calls are a scam and the USU Police Department wants the public to know that law enforcement will never ask for money in lieu of arrest and reminds people to never provide any personal information over the phone.

The calls began in late September and the scam is similar to other telephone scams that have been occurring across the country involving federal agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service. The scammers tell the person they have their name, address and some other personal information. They then threaten the subject saying they owe money for tuition or have warrants and need to pay over the phone using a checking account or credit/debit card. 

“We want the public alerted to this scam as we are concerned for the safety and well-being of our campus community,” said Steve Milne, captain of USU‘s Police Department. “The callers are abusive and threatening and appear to be targeting those who may be here from other countries.”

Anyone who is a victim of this type of scam is asked to report it to their local law enforcement agency or the USU Police Department at 435-797-1939.
