Spring Commencement 2005
One of Utah State University's most prominent alums, Merlin Olsen, will deliver the featured address during Utah State's 113th undergraduate commencement ceremony Saturday, May 7, in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The traditional graduation march begins at 9:30 a.m. from the Quad and continues to the Smith Spectrum, where the ceremony begins at 10 a.m. For a complete schedule of events, see the commencement Web site.
President Stan Albrecht will moderate the ceremony, which for the third year in a row will feature a student commencement speaker. The highlight of this year's commencement ceremony is the individual conferring of degrees. Each student's name will be read aloud as they cross the stage, a new addition this year.
Students from 47 states and 36 nations will be among the approximately 3,428 students to receive bachelor's degrees.
The graduate student commencement ceremony is Friday, May 6, in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum beginning at 1 p.m. Approximately 401 master's degree will be awarded, and 30 students will receive doctorate degrees.
The numbers of both undergraduate and graduate degrees are down this spring because Utah State held its first fall commencement in December 2004, which alleviated some of the crowding of the spring event.
Shane A. Marx, valedictorian for the College of Education and Human Services, will deliver remarks to the graduating class. Marx was selected by a committee of students and other valedictorians from among the pool of valedictorians from each of the colleges.
A mandatory graduation rehearsal is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, at noon on the HPER field south of the Spectrum. The rehearsal is important so students will be in the right place at the right time, since their names will be read in order.
Individual college celebrations will immediately follow the commencement ceremony in various locations across campus. Check the commencement program for information about a specific college celebration.
The university also will bestow a number of other honors during the commencement, including:
