Small Jazz Ensembles Ready to Supply Big Sound in Concert

The Utah State University Jazz Combos presents Small Time Big Time Jam Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the USU Performance Hall.

The Small Time Big Time Jam jazz concert features four combos that are directed by faculty and students alike.

“These small groups will play some big-time music with a lot of individual fervor,” said Greg Wheeler, director of the USU Jazz Ensemble.

This year’s groups include the Caine Jazz Combo, coached by USU music faculty member Corey Christiansen, and the Jazz Combo No. 2 coached by Jason Nicholson, USU’s percussion instructor. The other two combos are directed by USU students Kelin Gibbons and Clovis Ward, while supervised by Wheeler.

The concert includes tunes of a variety of styles from the works of Dizzy Gillespie to Pat Metheny, from the great ballads of Van Husen’s Polka Dots and Moonbeams to the hot funk of Thelonious Monk’s Well You Needn’t.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and youth, $5 for USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Caine College of the Arts Box Office located in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center, by calling 435-797-8022 or online.
