Silcock Sets USU Record, Reaches Automatic NCAA High Jump Qualifying Mark

Senior high jumper Clint Silcock set a new Utah State [University] record in the indoor high jump with a mark of 7-04.25 (2.24m) on Friday [Feb. 5, 2011], the first day of action at the New Mexico Classic held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The previous record was 2.23m set by Dave Hoffman in 1999.

Silcock also hit the NCAA automatic qualifying provisional mark of 2.24m which will result in a trip the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., March 10-12. He remains undefeated in the high jump this season and holds the Western Athletic Conference season-best height in the high jump.

Also leading the Aggies in the first day of action was senior Armahd Lewis who finished third in the 200m (21.49), edging out USU freshman Parker Bluth's career-best time of 21.55. Junior Damian Szade took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 23-01.25 (7.04m) as freshman Jake Peterson also placed fourth in the 600m (1:21.42). Rounding out the top five for the Utah State men was sophomore Eric Follett who finished tied for fifth in the high jump (6-06.25 [1.99m]) with Gage Mayer from West Texas A&M and Zach Wood from Air Force.

Freshman Chari Hawkins set her new career-best height, 5-08.00 (1.73m) in the high jump, finishing tied for fourth-place. Also placing fourth in their respective events was senior Lindsey Spencer in the weight throw (52-08.75 [16.07m]) and sophomore Amber Thompson in the unseeded pole vault (11-09.75 [3.60m]). Junior Sonia Grabowska took fifth-place in the seeded pole vault competition with a mark of 12-09.50 (3.90m).

Utah State will conclude action on Saturday, Feb. 5, starting at 8 a.m. (MT) with the men's heptathlon. The meet is scheduled to conclude with the men and women's 4x400-meter relays at 4:05 and 4:10 p.m., respectively.

Following the New Mexico Classic, the Aggies will send their athletes to two different meets. Some Aggies will compete at the Washington Open in Seattle, Wash., with the other athletes traveling to Boise, Idaho, for the Boise State Open both meets will to be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12. Boise State will also host the 2011 WAC Indoor Championships n Feb. 23-26 at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.
