Services for Former Sociology Professor Aug. 5

Long-time Utah State University faculty member Alice Colton Smith passed away July 31, noted Rick Krannich, head of USU’s Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Ensign Stake Building, 135 A Street, Salt Lake City. Services begin at 11 a.m. and burial follows at the Salt Lake Cemetery.

 

Alice Colton Smith was born in Vernal, Utah, and moved to Washington, D.C., when her father, Don Byron Colton, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

 

She attended George Washington University and the University of Utah and graduated from Columbia University in 1934. She married Whitney Smith that year and they lived in Madison, Wis., and Los Angeles, Calif., before moving to Logan in 1946. She earned a master’s degree in sociology from USU and subsequently taught in the department for many years.

 

“Alice Colton Smith was a long-time and respected member of the sociology department,” Krannich said. “She remained very active on committees well into her emeriti years.”

 

Smith was active in community organizations and activities and in her church. She served 14 years on the Relief Society General Board for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
