Science and Judaism Scholar to Speak at Utah State University

The Department of Languages, Philosophy and Speech Communication at Utah State University will sponsor a talk by a leading Jewish scholar on the problem of science and religion in Judaism. The speaker, professor Menachem Fisch from Tel Aviv University in Israel, presents “Science, Judaism, and the Religious Crisis of Modernity” Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 1:30 p.m. in Old Main 225 on the Utah State campus.

 

Fisch is one of the leading scholars on science and Judaism in the world, according to Utah State faculty member Richard Sherlock. He is also an expert on 19^th century British science and philosophy. He is a member of the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas and is Head of the School of Philosophy at Tel Aviv University. Fisch is also chair of the Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science at the Israel Academy of Science. He has held visiting positions at  Cambridge, Oxford, MIT and Princeton.

 

Fisch is the author of  “William Whewell: Philosopher of Science,” published by Oxford University Press, and “Rational Rabbis: Science and Talmudic Culture,”  published by the University of Indiana Press in 1997.
