Roads vs. Light-Rail
Though city and state governments applaud light-rail, critics charge that new construction is too expensive. What opponents fail to recognize, says Utah State University researcher Ed Stafford, is that taxpayer-subsidized, toll-free roads are even more costly to maintain and patrol, while governments can generate ongoing revenue from public transport.
