'Remember Your M&Ms' Theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Week

“Remember your M&Ms” is the theme of Utah State University’s 2006 observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We urge all women to remember two things: mammograms and monthly self-exams,” says Ashlee Cooper, a health educator at USU’s Student Health and Wellness Center. “Early detection is the best protection.”

 

Wednesday, Oct. 25, Aggies are invited to visit an educational exhibit from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center International Lounge that offers information about breast cancer detection and prevention, along with other women’s health issues.

 

“Women of all ages get breast cancer and people should be aware of the signs, risk factors and detection methods,” says Cooper.

 

Women should start conducting monthly self breast exams by age 20 and yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40, she says.

 

“At our exhibit, we’ll provide information on how to perform self-exams, the early warning signs of breast cancer, local facilities that offer mammograms and more,” says Cooper.

 

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 200,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the United States. Nearly 1,600 of those people will be men. If detected early, breast cancer can, in most cases, be effectively treated.
