Reception Held for Dominican Republic Students at President's Home
Utah State University President Stan L. Albrecht and First Lady Joyce Albrecht hosted a group of 142 USU students from the Dominican Republic at the President’s Home Monday, Aug. 29.
One hundred-one additional students from the Dominican Republic will attend USU as part of a unique educational program established in partnership with the Dominican Republic government. The incoming students will join 47 current USU students from the Dominican Republic who have been attending USU.
“We are excited to host these new students from the Dominican Republic and have them join our already talented and energetic Dominican students,” said Steven Hanks, Utah State vice provost.
The newest class of Dominican students is comprised of 23 graduate students and 78 undergraduate students. These additions will more than double the number of students from the Dominican Republic attending Utah State.
The students were welcomed by administrators and treated to refreshments, including Aggie Ice. USU t-shirts were presented to the students as welcome gifts, and plenty of jazz music added to the festive occasion. Block-A floral arrangements decorated the colorful reception tables.
“I love Utah State,” said incoming freshman, Deniels Mayers Espinal. “The people are so friendly and welcoming. I am ready to study very, very hard, take that knowledge back to my country and apply it to help people. I am very happy to be here.”
The new Dominican students will be studying a variety of disciplines. As of Spring 2007, 31 Dominican students had above a 3.5 GPA and seven students had 4.0 GPA’s.
“It has been wonderful to watch the Dominican students as they mature and find success at Utah State,” Hanks said. “We are excited to see more students achieve success as those in past have done and to partner with a government rich in educational heritage.”
The students left the President’s Home in a lighthearted mood, ready to start the academic year on a social and successful note.
