'Protect Water, Protect Life': 2015 Natural Resources Week at USU
Aggies are invited to participate in a variety of activities during Natural Resources Week March 28-April 3. Theme for the week is 'Protect Water, Protect Life.'
The Cache Valley community is invited to enjoy a variety of activities marking Utah State University’s Quinney College of Natural Resources Week March 28-April 3.
Held in conjunction with USU’s 2015 Spring Runoff Conference, the festivities include lectures from nationally renowned speakers, a nature photo exhibit, a ‘home on the range’ activity, a 5K fun run and a benefit lunch for the Cache Community Food Pantry. The week’s activities are open to all; many are free, unless otherwise noted.
Theme for the week is “Protect Water, Protect Life.”
“In celebration of USU’s ‘Year of Water,’ we chose a theme that focuses on one of Utah’s most precious resources,” says Arthur Wallis, QCNR student senator. “We welcome the entire USU community to join us for fun, learning and service.”
Monday through Friday, Aggies are invited to view the annual Natural Resources Photo Contest Display in the Stevenson Ballroom lobby of the Taggart Student Center and vote for their favorite entries.

Saturday, March 28
Aggie running enthusiasts are invited to participate in the annual Predator vs. Prey 5K Run starting at 1:30 p.m. on the Natural Resources Building patio. Cost per person is $7 with advance registration in NR 120 or $10 the day of the race. Registration includes a Natural Resources Week T-shirt.
Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and fastest times. This is a “no waste” event, so please bring your own water bottle.
Saturday evening, the college will honor its top scholars with an awards banquet.
Monday, March 30
Dan Beard, former commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, presents “New Perspectives on Western Water Policy” at 4 p.m. in ESLC 046. Beard is author of the newly released book Deadbeat Dams, a provocative critique of Western water management. His talk is free and open to the public. USU Campus Store will offer copies of his book for purchase.
Tuesday, March 31
USU’s annual Spring Runoff Conference opens at 8 a.m. in the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium. Student admission is free and Aggies are welcome to attend as many of the two-day conference’s sessions as their schedules allow. All participants are asked to register online in advance at the conference website.
From 11 a.m.-1 p.m., enjoy Dutch oven potatoes prepared by the USU Range Club on the outdoor grassy area south of the Biology-Natural Resources building. Cost per plate is $2 and drinks are $1. The event also features a display of baby animals.
Tuesday evening, all are invited to a free screening of the 2013 documentary “Watermark” at 7 p.m. in the ECC Auditorium. The feature-length film, produced by Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky, highlights stories collected from around the globe of people’s relationship with water. The screening, sponsored by USU’s Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and the Utah Film Center, is followed by a panel discussion.
Wednesday, April 1
Enjoy a hearty Loggers’ Breakfast on the TSC patio. A fundraiser for the USU Forestry Club, cost is $4 per plate. Meals are served from 7:30-10:30 a.m.
At noon, all are invited to the NR Week/Spring Runoff Conference Keynote Address by Lynn Ingram, professor of Earth and planetary science and geography at the University of California, Berkeley. Ingram presents “The West Without Water” in the ECC Auditorium.
Thursday, April 2
From 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., all are invited to the fourth annual Empty Bowls Luncheon in the Natural Resources Building Atrium. For up to $10, select a hand-crafted bowl and receive delicious soup, along with bread and water. You keep the bowl to remind you to support hunger-fighting community efforts each time you use it. All proceeds from the luncheon benefit the Cache Community Food Pantry. Less expensive bowl options are offered and credit cards are accepted.
Friday, April 3
All Aggies are invited to the “Chacos and Tacos” social from 7-9 p.m. in the Natural Resources Building Atrium. Enjoy food, music, dancing and fun. Guests are invited to dress as they think Natural Resources students dress.
