President Albrecht Opens Tanner Symposium

Utah State University President Stan Albrecht opened the 2006 Tanner Symposium, “The 1950s: the Beat Generation and the Power of Expression,” Wednesday, March 1. Sessions began in the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall. Heading up efforts for the 2006 Tanner Symposium is Chair Victoria Grieve, assistant professor in USU’s Department of History.

“I, unlike our symposium director, can remember the Beat era,” Albrecht said to the opening-day crowd. “Welcome to Utah State University and I wish you the best as you go through the next several days. I welcome you to this beautiful new venue that we opened just weeks ago. You will also spend some time in our new library, an amazing new modern facility.”

 

Today, March 1, is a critical time from Utah State University because Utah’s 2006 legislative session concludes, Albrecht told the crowd. Final details from the legislative session marked Albrecht’s schedule for the remainder of the day.

 

“I am extremely proud of this institution,” Albrecht said. “Seven years ago when I served as dean in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, I learned that the state provides the basic resources for the university. However, if we want to go beyond and become great, we must rely on the resources of many, including those sponsors who make the Tanner Symposium possible. Foundations like the Obert C. and Grace Tanner Foundation and the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation allow us to go beyond the norm and provide exciting, stimulating and challenging sessions in symposiums like today’s.”

 

Victoria Grieve welcomed guests as well, and thanked symposium sponsors, including the Tanner Foundation, USU’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, the Utah Humanities Council, USU’s Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and USU’s Merrill-Cazier Library.

 

College of HASS Dean Gary Kiger and Caine School of the Arts Director Tom Peterson welcomed guests as well.
