Piano Students in the Spotlight for Next Midsummer Night's Magic at USU
Piano students who study with professor Gary Amano take the stage for the July 23 concert in the “Midsummer Night’s Magic at the Performance Hall” concert series sponsored by Utah State University’s Music Department. The concert is Wednesday, July 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on USU’s campus (approximately 1090 E. 675 North, Logan). Tickets are $10 and all proceeds go toward student scholarships.
The evening’s performers include Trenton Chang, age 10, Weiyi Le, an 8th grade student at Fairfield Jr. High in Layton, Utah, and USU students John Sargeant, Brandon Lee, Jessica Roderer and Luke Hancock. Hancock is one of four graduate students admitted to the music department’s newly approved master’s program in piano.

The highly successful piano program is headed by Amano, and his students have captured top honors at piano competitions at the national and international levels.
“These performances will be at a very high level,” Amano said. “Students on the program have won competitions across the country and have performed with professional orchestras, including the Utah Symphony. A month ago, John Sargeant won $5,000 at the Snowy Range Competition in Wyoming.”
The Wednesday concert is part of the Midsummer Night’s Magic series, but piano concerts continue July 25 and 26 in the Cool Classics Series, a summer tradition in the piano program. The July 25 concert features pre-college students, and the July 26 concert features the Coombs and Lee family pianists. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall.
Upcoming Midsummer Night’s Magic concerts include the Fry Street Quartet July 30 and the Mike and Corey Christiansen Guitar Duo Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall.
