Organic is In
In an effort to be more conscious of precious land and the food resources, many students are volunteering at the Utah State University Student Organic Farm, a student-run organization aimed at providing educational opportunities and fresh, organic produce for the surrounding community.
The farm’s purpose is to “promote a healthy community and sustainable environment through food production, education, outreach and advocacy,” according to the group’s mission statement.
The farm operates up to 11 months of the year — no longer hindered by Logan’s infamous winters, thanks to the recent addition of hoop houses. It grows an assortment of exotic, organic produce, of which zucchini, kale and rutabaga are not the strangest.
Students interested in helping or supporting the farm can do so in a variety of ways.
“We are in need of volunteers to assist with soil preparation, planting, harvesting, weeding and marketing of produce,” said Jennifer Reeve, faculty advisor and mentor to the developing farming project. “Don’t be concerned if you’ve no experience farming. Our student farm managers will introduce new volunteers to the farm and put them to work.”
The farm is open for new volunteers during these designated times:
Tuesday, 11:15 a.m.-2:45 p.m.
Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. – till dark
Thursday, 3:30 p.m. – till dark
Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. – till dark
Thursday, 3:30 p.m. – till dark
Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Potential volunteers should contact Reeve at Jennifer.Reeve@usu.edu if they would like to be included on the email list and receive weekly updates about the farm.
For those interested in supporting the farm, but unable to find the time to volunteer, the farm sells the week’s harvest at a stand outside the TSC every Wednesday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
“Last week I bought a bag full of delicious produce — fun-colored bright lights chard, a bundle of fragrant sweet basil and three small, yellow squash, all for $5.50,” said Katie Fisher, a recent customer.
“I love all of it,” said Kristin Lindstrom, student farm manager. “But the best part is when we have people come, and we teach them what we know about farming and learn from them.”

The Student Organic Farm is located at 800 E. and approximately 1700 North, in Logan, Utah.
