Opera Gala Next in USU's Midsummer Night's Magic Series

The Midsummer Night’s Magic at the Performance Hall concert series continues Wednesday, July 16, at the Performance Hall on the Utah State University campus (approximately 1090 E. 675 North, Logan). The featured performers for the week include faculty and students in the vocal program performing repertoire from the operatic literature. Concert time is 7:30 p.m.

Admission to the Opera Gala is $10, and all proceeds support scholarships for music students at USU.

 

The Midsummer Night’s Magic Series was initiated by Music Department Head Craig Jessop, who joined the department in May 2008.

 

“I am delighted with the response of our local community and from our guests who make Logan their home in the summer,” Jessop said. “Their attendance and response to this concert series has been outstanding. I am also very grateful to our faculty and students who have so generously given of their time and talents for this worthy enterprise. Together, during these difficult financial times, we are helping some of our finest students with an education that they might not be able to receive in any other way. Thanks to everyone for making this such an outstanding success this summer.”

 

The Opera Gala features selections from various operas, including Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Verdi’s La Traviata. Arias and ensembles will be presented in Italian, French, Russian, Czech and English with supertitles.

 

Music department faculty member Cindy Dewey heads the voice program at USU.

 

“Our department is fortunate to have so many gifted students,” Dewey said. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to utilize their talents, especially for the purpose of raising scholarship money.”

 

The concert provides an opportunity to become familiar with many of opera’s greatest hits, she said.

 

Future Midsummer Night’s Magic performances will feature piano students of Gary Amano (July 23), the Fry Street Quartet (July 30) and the Mike and Corey Christiansen Guitar Duo (Aug. 6).
