Old Main's "A" Goes Dark to Mark Earth Hour
The "A" atop Old Main will be dark in observance of Earth Hour Saturday, March 19, from 8:30-9:30 p.m.
This Saturday, March 19, the iconic “A” on Utah State University’s Old Main tower will go dark from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. to mark Earth Hour, a global movement that raises awareness about climate change.
“Every year during March, the Earth Hour movement asks people to turn off non-essential lights in their homes and offices to raise awareness about the effects of climate change and our contribution to it,” said Frank De León of USU’s International Student Council.
Earth Hour is a global movement planned by the World Wide Fund for Nature. It began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, but has since spread to more than 178 countries, and, this year, the USU International Student Council is bringing it to USU. This is the second time the “A” will be turned off for Earth Hour, and De León said it’s a symbolic gesture that he hopes will bring greater awareness to the movement.
De León said he hopes other community members will join the effort and spread the message through social media by tagging posts with the hashtag #EarthHourUSU.
