Nominations Sought for Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award
Nominations for the university’s 2007 Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award are being solicited. Nominations can be submitted by USU faculty, students or alumni, or departments and programs. The nomination should include a letter (no more than five pages), discussing the nominee’s mentoring approach, activities and successes; the nominee’s curriculum vitae, including a list of graduate students mentored and identification of publications co-authored with graduate students; and a list of individuals the nominator has requested to send letters of support. The letters of support must arrive by Jan. 19, 2007.
The Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award recognizes faculty excellence in the complex process of mentoring graduate students and preparing them for productive careers. The award includes a $2,000 prize. The awardee is invited to prepare a brief essay on mentoring that is shared with the university community.
Nomination materials for the 2007 award must be submitted to the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, by Jan. 19, 2007.
The School of Graduate Studies has assembled a list of attributes of an outstanding mentor.
- An effective advisor who facilitates degree completion
- A model of sound scholarship and ethical academic behavior
- A sponsor who helps students understand and benefit from departmental and university resources
- A source of emotional support who provides constructive criticism
- A colleague who involves students in publishing and other professional activities
Letters of support for the nomination should be sent to Teresa Passey, assistant to the dean, School of Graduate Studies, Utah State University, 0900 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84322-0900. Letters of nomination and support may be released to the media once the award has been announced.
