Nine from USU's Department of Art Participate in State Art Exhibit
Homage, an exhibit organized by Utah’s Department of Community and Culture, Division of Arts and Museums, was developed to pay tribute to “that spark of creativity and its source,” exhibit organizers said. The event is about the moment in which an artist is inspired by an image and pays tribute to that spark of creativity and its source. Four Utah State University Art Department faculty within the Caine College of the Arts have been invited to participate, including Christopher Terry, interim department head; John Neely, professor of art, ceramics; Jane Catlin, associate professor of drawing/painting; and Noel Carmack, department chair and instructor of art, drawing/painting, USU-CEU. In addition, USU alumni Justin Wheatley, Steven Stradley, Emily Bunnel, Spencer Budd and Namon Bills will be featured.
Homage features 30 Utah artists and the individuals that inspire them, and opens at the Rio Gallery in Salt Lake City (300 S. Rio Grande Street) Friday, March 18. An artists’ reception from 6 to 9 p.m. is offered that day during the Gallery Stroll.
The exhibit can be seen Monday through Thursday, March 18 through April 28, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the gallery.
Each of the 30 artists invited to participate select an individual who has influenced their work — one they would like to pay tribute to. The pieces in the show are not copies of existing artworks, but rather each artist’s homage to this person’s influence in their life and work. The people selected as influences range from icons of art history to art professors and teachers; they include writers, and in one case, the artist’s father.
The show includes well-established as well as emerging artists who work in a variety of media and styles. The show includes painting, sculpture and ceramics, as well as video and installation art.
