New Scholarship for International Students
The late Afton Tew was involved with international program at USU for many years. A new scholarship has been named in her honor.
The Office of Global Engagement supports and advocates for international students and scholars visiting and studying at Utah State University, helping them to integrate with campus and the Cache Valley community.
“It’s a busy time of year for our office,” said Janis Boettinger, vice provost and director of Global Engagement. “We have been working hard to understand the needs of our students.
“At the International Student Council’s International Banquet to be held Friday, March 18, we will take a few moments to celebrate the late Afton B. Tew, former director of International Students and Scholars, by naming a new scholarship in her honor. In partnership with the Office of Admissions, this scholarship will be available to new international undergraduate students.”
The Tew family has a long legacy at USU. Orson Tew served as the first director of International Students and Scholars in 1962. After his death in 1974, his wife, Afton, worked as the program coordinator for international students and then served as director from 1992 to2000. Afton started many programs and activities that are still in existence, including the International Banquet, International Wives Club and International Family Night. The International Student Lounge in the Taggart Student Center is named in honor of both Orson and Afton.
Afton Tew’s legacy includes a lifetime of volunteer service. She inspired students and scholars from around the globe. The creation of this scholarship will allow her sincere advocacy and belief in international education to continue and touch the lives of new incoming freshman and transfer students.
“This scholarship allows USU to honor her memory and to support the efforts to bring more international students to USU,” said Boettinger.
The International Banquet is an evening of great food and live performance showcasing the diverse cultures and talents of USU’s international students. The event is Friday, March 18, at 7 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Stevenson Ballroom. Tickets are $12 or $8 for students and are available for purchase at the USU Card Office.
