Myth and Magic: Enter the World of Harry Potter at Museum of Anthropology

Visitors can learn about the world of myths and magic as they enter the magical world of Harry Potter during activities Saturday, Oct. 8, at Utah State University’s Museum of Anthropology.

In the ongoing “Saturdays at the Museum” series, the museum will bring a bit of Hogwarts to Cache Valley. Visitors to the museum can join the “Potions” class to make things go “boom, pop or bubble over the top,” organizers said. During the “Charms” class, participants will learn about ways people throughout time have protected themselves against dark magic and illness.

Visitors can also sample delightful food examples from the world of Harry Potter and make a licorice wand or chocolate frog.

And, those with extra energy can enjoy a game of Quidditch, with play times at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m. Visitors can also participate in the Harry Potter costume contest at 1 p.m. and compete for free Aggie Ice Cream.

Throughout the day, visitors can see poster displays about author J.K. Rowling and the phenomenon of Harry Potter.

“Harry Potter has influenced a whole generation across the globe,” said Jessica Swift, Saturdays program coordinator. “We grew up with Harry. We cried when he did and rejoiced with him. Now we are offering museum patrons the chance to get to know Harry’s world through the eyes of Muggles, the non-magic folk, and learn how people have traditionally combated dark witches and wizards, made charms and created potions for home remedies.”

Community members, as well as Utah State students, can visit the museum during its operating hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Funding for the Saturday events is provided by a grant from the United States Institute of Museum and Library Services. More information about the IMLS is available online.

The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252. Admission is free. For Saturday activities, free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.
