Music Students Honored

John Sargeant, a piano student who studies with Gary Amano, won the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) Junior Performance category competition at the association's national competition in Seattle, Wash. Amano is a faculty member in the Department of Music where he heads the piano program. His students have won numerous piano competitions at the state, region and national levels.
 
The MTNA junior performance category includes musicians between ages 11 and 14. Sargeant not only represented the state of Utah but the Southwest Region at the competition. Second and third place winners included Christine Yoon from the East Central division and Yvonne Chen from the Southern division.
 
MTNA holds competitions in the areas of brass, string and woodwind instruments, in addition to the piano competitions.
 
Casey Cangelosi, a Music Department graduate, received an impressive scholarship to attend the Boston Conservatory of Music. A percussionist, Cangelosi studied with faculty member Dennis Griffin who heads the percussion program in the department.
 
Cangelosi too is an award-winning student, who has won numerous competitions. He took first place at the Utah Percussion Festival several times, in addition to winning regional and national awards. As a student at Utah State University he was featured in the music department's annual concerto concert. His scholarship to the conservatory is valued at more than $24,000.
