'Museum and Music' — The Music of Dane Rudhyar - Ron Squibbs, Pianist

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) at Utah State University presents its inaugural “Museum and Music” event and gallery talk. The offering is coordinated by Christopher Scheer, doctor of musicology and music history in the Caine College of the Arts. The event is Sunday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m. at the museum and features pianist Ronald Squibbs performing music composed by author, painter and composer Dane Rudhyar.

Katie Lee Koven, director of NEHMA, said Rudhyar was affiliated with the Transcendental Painting Group, a group of artists based in Santa Fe that formalized in 1938.

“NEHMA is currently home to the exhibit Enchanted Modernities Mysticism, Landscape and the American West,” said Lee Koven. “The exhibit includes paintings done by Rudhyar and other members of the Transcendental Painting Group.”

Scheer will introduce Squibbs, associate professor of music theory at University of Connecticut, and help the audience understand connections between the visual and the aural.

Squibbs received a bachelor of arts in music and a doctor of philosophy from Yale. His research interests are focused on 20th century music from Europe, Asia and the United States. He is also active in live and recorded performance.

Lee Koven said Scheer, who is also curator of Enchanted Modernities: Mysticism, Landscape and the American West, will also give a gallery talk on Sept. 24 at noon.

“Museum and Music is intended to be a casual Sunday afternoon event,” said Lee Koven. “Light refreshments will be served following the performance.”

“Museum and Music” is free and open to the public. NEHMA is located on the USU campus and is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information see the museum’s website or call the CCA Box Office at 435-797-8022.
