'Mercurial Meanderings' Topic for March 24 Water@USU Seminar

Water@USU, a Utah State University Water Initiative project, welcomes ecologist Rene Henery of the University of Nevada, Reno as featured speaker for the group’s Tuesday, March 24 seminar. Henery presents “Mercurial Meanderings and Fishy Floodplains: Exploring Growth and Mercury Accumulation in Juvenile Chinook Salmon from the Sacramento River and its Floodplain, the Yolo Bypass” at 4 p.m. in the Biology-Natural Resources Building, room 102. His talk is free and open to all.

Henery recently completed his doctorate degree in environmental geography at the University of California, Davis and is currently a postdoctoral researcher in UNR’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science. He serves as research director of the university’s Castle Lake Long-Term Research Program and is also the research director for the California-based River Exchange, a non-profit organization that promotes healthy watersheds in the state’s Siskiyou County.

Henery’s research focuses on food-web subsidies between aquatic and terrestrial habitats, productivity in headwater stream networks, conservation of California native fishes and the impacts of climate change on food-web dynamics.

Registration for Water@USU’s annual Spring Runoff Conference, slated for April 2-3 in the Eccles Conference Center, is now in progress. Conference participation is free for students, but all participants must register. Information about the conference, which convenes jointly with the USU-based Utah Climate Center’s Intermountain Meteorology Workshop, is available on the conference Web site.

Water@USU is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory, the colleges of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Natural Resources, Science, Engineering, Agriculture and the Huntsman School of Business. Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout campus and the community.
