DOUBLE MEET WEEKEND — Utah State [University] gymnastics is set for its final two meets of the regular season. First, the Aggies welcome BYU to Logan for USU’s “Senior Night” Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. Five Aggie seniors, Breyanna Aufiero, Kaitlyn Betts, Sarah Landes, Susie Miller and Stefanie Nelson will be recognized following the meet.
Then, Utah State travels to Sacramento State Sunday, March 15, for a 2 p.m. meet.

Links to both will be posted on the Utah State Athletics website on Friday. Fans can also follow the Utah State gymnastics social media outlets for meet updates.

TELL ME ABOUT RQS — At this point in the collegiate gymnastics season, all rankings and qualification scores are based on the teams’ Regional Qualifying Score (RQS). Each week, the RQS is recalculated as it eliminates the season-best score while averaging the next five top scores, including the top three road scores, and the next two highest scores.
The teams with the 36 best RQS numbers will qualify as a team for the NCAA Regional meets which will be held at six different locations. Additionally, five all-around competitors and one specialist from each event who are members of non-qualifying teams will be selected to compete at each Regional meet.
This week, Utah State is just inside the top 36, with an RQS of 195.090 to place 36th.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION — BYU is coming off a third-place finish at a tri-meet it hosted with Utah State and Central Michigan. The Cougars scored a 194.400. BYU recorded a season-high 49.050 on bars, while also breaking the 49.000-point barrier on floor with a 49.175. BYU’s Makenzie Johnson won the all-around with a 39.275, and was named the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Gymnast of the Week after her performance. Jill Van Mierlo has also been named an MRGC Gymnast of the Week this season.
BYU is ranked 32nd in the latest RQS standings with a 195.180. The Cougars rank 32nd on vault with a 48.925, tied for 31st on bars with a 48.825, 49th on beam with a 48.375 and 21st on floor with a 49.095.
The Cougars are coached by Brad Cattermole, who is in his 28th year at the helm of the gymnastics program. Cattermole has guided the Cougars to eight National Championship Tournament appearances and 23 NCAA Regionals berths. Cattermole was named the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship Coach of the Year in 2014.
Sacramento State is coming off a third-place finish at a quad-meet hosted by San José State with Utah State and Seattle Pacific. The Hornets scored a season-high 195.050 team score, including a 48.775 on vault. Lauren Rice led the Hornets in the all-around by posting a career-best 39.150 score, including a second-place finish on the beam with a 9.825. Rice was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season for her efforts.
The Hornets are currently 47th in the RQS standings with a 194.210. They rank tied for 45th on vault with a 48.700, 41st on bars with a 48.705, 48th on beam with a 48.385 and 38th on floor with a 48.880.
Sacramento State is coached by Kim Hughes, who is in his 34th season as head coach of the Hornets, and his 38th season overall at Sacramento State. Hughes has led Sacramento State to eight conference titles since 2000, including the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crown. Hughes is set to retire at the end of the season, making this the final home meet of his career.
LAST TIME OUT — Utah State gymnastics tied the 18th-best score in school history Sunday afternoon [March 8] with a 195.750, led by a season-high floor score, to claim first place at the San José State Quad-Meet. The Aggies competed against San José State (195.675), Sacramento State (195.050) and Seattle Pacific (194.025).
Utah State recorded a 48.950 on vault, a 48.825 on bars, a 48.675 on beam and a season-high 49.300 on floor to score its season-high 195.750. San José State scored a 49.075 on vault, a 48.825 on bars, a 49.075 on beam and a 48.700 on floor to earn its 195.675. Sacramento State posted a 48.775 on vault, a 48.750 on bars, a 48.875 on beam and a 48.650 on floor to earn a 195.050 team score. Seattle Pacific posted a 48.675 on vault, a 48.325 on bars, a 48.225 on beam and a 48.800 on floor for its 194.025.
In the all-around, USU was led by senior Sarah Landes who placed second with a 39.200 (vault: 9.875, bars: 9.675, beam: 9.775, floor: 9.875). Junior McKinzey Martinez took fifth with a 39.000 (vault: 9.675, bars: 9.775, beam: 9.675, floor: 9.875). Sophomore Bailey McIntire took eighth with a 38.375 (vault: 9.775, bars: 9.825, beam: 8.900, floor: 9.875). San José State's Cami Guyer took first with a 39.350.
