McKenzie Davis Set To Compete At National Indoor Championship

Utah State [University] women’s tennis player McKenzie Davis is set to compete at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship held in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., from Thursday, Nov. 6 through Sunday, Nov. 9. Davis is the first Aggie in program history to compete at this event.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Davis said. “To be the first to do anything, you’re the only one who can say you were the first. I guess that’s pretty cool. I think it’ll be pretty awesome just for me to remember this. My senior year, this is all happening at the end of my career, it’s pretty awesome.”

In the opening round of the National Indoor Championship, Davis is scheduled to face Oklahoma State’s Viktoriya Lushkova, the No. 8 seed in the tournament and the No. 26-ranked player in the country.

Davis punched her ticket to New York after winning the ITA Mountain Region Championship by defeating No. 76 Tereza Bekerova from Utah in the finals. The winner of each regional tournament earned an automatic berth to the championships in New York.

The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall collegiate tennis season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for both men and women. This is the fifth consecutive year the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be held at the home of the U.S. Open.

“McKenzie did a fantastic job today representing Utah State University against one of the best players in the country,” said USU head coach Sean McInerney. “She played a smart and solid match, but her opponent was simply too good today. She is looking forward to another opportunity to take home a win tomorrow.”
