Making Math Fun
A group of USU researchers have come up with a creative and effective way to teach mathematical concepts to school children. The group, comprised of researchers from the colleges of Science and Education and Human Services, has created an interactive, Web-based library of virtual manipulatives after receiving a $1.2 million National Research Foundation grant in 1999. Virtual exercises are much more interactive than static objects and give teachers greater flexibility, says USU mathematics professor Robert Heal. Available online and free of charge, the library has attracted attention throughout the United States and the world. During the school year, the program’s Web site receives four million hits a day.
