Logan Canyon Winds Presents Fall Concert at Utah State University
Logan Canyon Winds, Utah State University’s faculty wind quintet, presents its fall recital Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the USU Performance Hall.
The concert opens with the Lettish Dances by Andrejs Jansons, a work based on traditional dances of Latvia. Following Lettish Dances, Logan Canyon Winds will present one of the standard works for wind quintet, the Serenade for Wind Quintet by English composer Gordon Jacob. This work, Jacob’s first for wind quintet, takes advantage of both the lyrical and technical possibilities of the instruments as it relies on the contrasts in sounds among them.
Logan Canyon Winds will also perform Anatol Liadov’s The Eight Russian Folk Songs, which are vignettes of Russian life. From the “Humorous Song” to the ominous “Legend of the Birds,” the folk songs are immersed in the traditional sounds of Russia.
For a change of pace, and as an early introduction to the holiday season, the quintet will close the program with three special arrangements of Christmas tunes by Imani Winds’ hornist Jeff Scott. Scott’s arrangements of I Saw Three Ships, Carol of the Bells and Bring a Torch are all written in a light jazz style.
“We are delighted to have Jason Nicholson, who is the assistant professor of percussion, join us for Bring a Torch,’ said Nicholas Morrison, Logan Canyon Winds clarinetist and senior associate dean of the Caine College of the Arts. “Jason’s sensitive jazz-playing is the perfect accompaniment to Scott’s unique arrangement of this popular Christmas carol.”
Members of the ensemble include Leslie Timmons on flute, Bonnie Schroeder on oboe, Morrison on clarinet, Steve Park on horn and Carolyn Bodily on bassoon. Founded in 1991, Logan Canyon Winds has performed across the United States and specializes in community engagement activities. It has performed for Chamber Music America in New York City, in schools throughout the Intermountain West and participated in a multi-year music project on the Navajo Reservation.
Tickets for the Nov. 29 concert are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and youth, $5 for USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID. Tickets can be purchased in person at the CCA Box Office located in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center, online or by calling 435-797-8022.
