Logan Canyon Winds in Concert with the Caine Woodwind Quintet

Utah State University’s faculty wind quintet, Logan Canyon Winds, presents its fall concert Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall. The group will perform with USU’s student member Caine Woodwind Quintet. General admission is $5, and students are admitted free. Tickets are available at the door.

“We are pleased that our apprentice quintet, the Caine Quintet, joins us for this performance,” said quintet member and USU professor of flute Leslie Timmons.

 

The two quintets will combine to perform a new work, commissioned by Logan Canyon Winds, written by American composer Adam Gorb. The commission is the result of a national consortium of which Logan Canyon Winds is a member ensemble. The work, called “French Dances Revisited,” is based on a classical suite of dances.

           

“The composition was written last year, but is reminiscent of dance music of the past,” said clarinetist Nicholas Morrison. “It’s a fun selection to play, and the dance style will be a familiar sound to the audience.”

 

The quintet performs another dance suite by Bill Douglas on the same program, in addition to music by European composers Zemlinsky and Reicha. 

 

“The Douglas piece is also a consortium premiere,” said Morrison. “It’s a jazzy, upbeat style of music that the audience will really enjoy.”

 

Morrison said that both new pieces are fun and easy to listen to.

 

Logan Canyon Winds has been at USU since 1991. The group has performed across the United States at venues including other universities and professional associations, such as Chamber Music America, for which they performed in 2007. 

 

The ensemble also has a commitment to outreach, having played in public schools from Utah to New York and for organizations such as the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and the Music Educators National Conference. 

 

Ensemble members are Leslie Timmons, flute; Bonnie Schroeder, oboe; Nicholas Morrison, clarinet; Steven Park, horn; and Carolyn Bodily, bassoon. Members of the Caine Quintet are Whitney Ecker (first-year student, flute); Angelica Holm (first-year student, oboe); Catherine Hatch (sophomore, clarinet); Nathan Ward (junior, horn); and Brittany Settles (first-year student, bass clarinet).
