Logan Canyon Winds in Concert

The Logan Canyon Winds, a Utah State University faculty wind quintet based in the Department of Music, is featured in concert Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. The concert takes place at the Caine Lyric Theatre, 28. W. Center, Logan. The concert is free and open to all.

 

Faculty members who comprise Logan Canyon Winds include Leslie Timmons, flute; Lara Saville, oboe; Nicholas Morrison, clarinet; Craig Knutson, horn; and Carolyn Bodily, bassoon. Joining the quintet for the evening are members of the Caine Woodwind Quintet. This group is an apprentice group to the Logan Canyon Winds and is supported by the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation.

 

“We’re delighted to give this performance with members of the Caine Quintet in the Caine Lyric Theatre,” said Morrison. “So much of our work in the arts at Utah State depends on the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, and we — both faculty and students — are grateful for the foundation’s support.”

 

The students will combine with their faculty mentors for a transcription of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, a lively work in early Baroque style, Morrison said. The work was originally composed by Pergolesi and re-engineered by Igor Stravinsky early in the 20th century.

 

“Stravinsky took Pergolesi’s manuscript and wrote in some extra notes, some of which wouldn’t have been exactly ‘right’ in the Baroque period,” Morrison said. “It’s pretty clear that Stravinsky had a sense of humor.”

 

The program includes standard wind quintet works by classical composers, including Cambini and Lefevre, contemporaries of Mozart and Beethoven, in addition to a relatively new work by John Addison, Divertimento for Wind Quintet. In addition to the standard combination of flute-oboe-clarinet-horn-bassoon, the Addison piece calls for three of the members of the quintet to double on alto flute, English horn and bass clarinet. These auxiliary instruments create a very dark sound for the slow movement of the Divertimento, Morrison said.

 

Another American composer, George Gershwin, is also represented on the program in the form of a transcription of his Piano Preludes.
