Logan Canyon Winds and Caine Woodwind Quintet in Concert at USU
The Logan Canyon Winds and the Caine Woodwind Quintet combine talents to perform a program of what they call an exciting program of standard and new works.
The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, in the Utah State University Performance Hall.
Tickets are $8 for general admission, $5 for USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
Members of Logan Canyon Winds are pleased to feature the Caine Woodwind Quintet in the planned concert. Supported by scholarships from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation—Russell Family, the Caine Quintet is made up of the finest wind students on campus. In addition to their work in chamber music, Caine Quintet members perform with the USU Symphony Orchestra and Wind Orchestra.
For the April 11 performance the Caine Woodwind Quintet joins the Logan Canyon Winds for a double wind quintet by Arthur Bird. Other works in the program include wind quintets by Jacques Ibert and Pavel Haas, along with a trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon by American composer Walter Piston.
Logan Canyon Winds was founded in 1991 as Utah State University’s Faculty Woodwind Quintet, giving a debut performance in May 1992. Quintet members include Leslie Timmons, flute; Bonnie Schroeder, oboe; Nicholas Morrison, clarinet; Carolyn Bodily, bassoon; and Steven Park, horn.
Logan Canyon Winds has appeared on the Uintah Arts Council Concert Series, the Salt Lake City Brown Bag Concert Series, the Mississippi State University Lyceum Series and the Utah State University Faculty Recital Series as well as at the University of Montana, Brigham Young University—Idaho, on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, the University of Central Florida and at the 1998 and 2000 National Conferences of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
The ensemble has also presented sessions for MENC — the National Association for Music Education — and performed at the 2007 National Conference of Chamber Music America in New York City.
Pioneering the creation of performance opportunities for students with a professional wind quintet, Logan Canyon Winds has commissioned several works for wind quintet and Orff Instrumentarium funded by Wilford and Marjorie Gardner. Additionally, the ensemble is uniquely equipped for work in outreach settings. Two members are conductors with university and public school experience, while two others have extensive Orff Schulwerk training.
Logan Canyon Winds is supported, in part, by a grant from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, by USU’s Department of Music and by the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University. The ensemble was recently the beneficiary of a planned gift from Wilford and Marjorie Gardner.
