Libby Larsen Composition to Premiere at USU with the Fry Street Quartet

Utah State University’s Department of Music presents the Fry Street Quartet in concert featuring the world premiere of composer Libby Larsen’s Emergence for string quartet. The concert also includes Haydn’s String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76, no. 2 and the Mendelssohn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44, no. 1.

The concert is Feb. 12 with a 7:30 p.m. performance time at the Caine Performance Hall on the USU Logan campus.

Emergence was written for the Fry Street Quartet as a part of its Crossroads Project, an ongoing endeavor by the FSQ and Robert Davies that creates multimedia performances exploring topics related to global sustainability. The piece by Larsen anchors a new chapter of the project and was funded with support from the Tanner Foundation, the Caine College of the Arts dean’s office and the Department of Music.

Larsen is one of America’s most performed living composers. She has created a catalog of more than 500 works spanning virtually every genre, from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive orchestral works and more than 12 operas. Grammy Award winning and widely recorded, Larsen is sought after for commissions and premieres by major artists, ensembles and orchestras around the world and has established a permanent place for her works in the concert repertory.

The full, multi-disciplinary expression of the concept will premiere in the fall of 2015 entitled “The Crossroads Project: Emergence.”

Tickets for the Fry Street Quartet’s Feb. 12 performance are $15 general admission, $10 seniors and youth, $5 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
