Learn About Middle Eastern Dance at the USU Museum of Anthropology

Middle Eastern dance (often referred to as “Belly Dance”) is in the spotlight March 15 at Utah State University’s Museum of Anthropology in its ongoing Saturday activity series.

USU students and members of the public are invited to the museum any time during the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday hours. Guests who visit the museum at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. will be treated to a performance by dancer “Mayyadah” and members of the USU Middle Eastern dance troupe Shazadi. An exhibit on the role of Middle Eastern dance in American culture will be on display as well.

 

“A lot of people have preconceived notions about Middle Eastern dancing,” said Holly Swenson (Mayyadah). “Unfortunately, a lot of those notions don’t consider how beautiful, friendly, expressive, therapeutic and difficult Middle Eastern dancing really is. It’s a worldwide passion for both women and men.”

 

The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, room 252. Free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.
