Latin American Cultural Extravaganza

“Latin American Cultural Extravaganza” kicks off the new Latin American Studies minor at Utah State University in a campus-wide celebration. A variety of events take place March 27-31 on the USU campus. Many of the events are free and open to the public.

The Latin American Studies minor will be offered for USU students beginning in Fall 2006. The week-long extravaganza introduces students to the many elements of program. There are multiple sponsors for the events, including the Latin American Studies committee; the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; the Museum of Anthropology; the departments of history, political science, and lnguages, philosophy and speech communication; the Merrill-Cazier Library, Cache MicroCinema; the Latino Student Union, the Dominican Student Association and the Spanish Club at Utah State University.

 

The establishment of the new Latin American Studies Program and minor at USU was facilitated by a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education. It was approved by the USU Board of Trustees in January 2006, and is expected to receive final approval from the Board of Regents in March.

 

“The minor provides USU students with invaluable opportunities to enhance and develop their language skills and knowledge of the peoples, cultures and countries of Latin America,” said Shannon Peterson, a member of the Latin American Studies committee. “Through the demonstration of international cultural knowledge and expertise, the minor aims to complement any existing university major.”
