LAEP Professor John Ellsworth Elected to ASLA Council of Fellows

John C. Ellsworth, professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University, has been elected to the national Council of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). He becomes the first sitting member of Utah State’s LAEP department to receive this honor, held by only two previous LAEP faculty, Karen Hanna and Gerald Smith.

 

The American Society of Landscape Architects will induct 32 new members into the Council of Fellows during its annual meeting Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in Salt Lake City.

 

The Utah Chapter of ASLA welcomed Ellsworth as only the fifth nationally recognized fellow from the state in the 105-year history of ASLA. Others previously honored as fellows are David Racker (‘95), Leonard Grassli (‘97), Jan Streifel (‘02) and Hanna (‘03).

 

The Council of Fellows includes more than 600 landscape architects recognized by their peers for outstanding accomplishments over a sustained period of time in works of landscape architecture, administrative leadership, knowledge or service to the profession.

 

Ellsworth was elected in the knowledge category. His induction into the Council of Fellows takes place in Salt Lake City Oct. 31. He will be recognized at the Fellows Investiture Dinner, a traditional event at the annual meeting.

 

“Election to the ASLA Council of Fellows by my professional peers is an overwhelming honor — humbling and yet invigorating,” Ellsworth said. “I am inspired to live up to the status of ASLA Fellow by continuing to do my best for my profession, my students and the people and places that benefit from my work.”

 

“John Ellsworth has been a steady and stellar force in Utah landscape architecture for over 20 years,” said Utah ASLA President Sharen Hauri in her nominating letter to the council. “Known for his teaching, his research and his service to the profession, professor Ellsworth has set new heights in technology and knowledge. He has succeeded in conveying the finer points of landscape change to students, professionals of every background and decision makers. John Ellsworth’s commitment to his own learning and to that of students from all walks of life sets him apart.”

 

Hanna, who previously served as Utah State’s LAEP department head, supported Ellsworth’s nomination.

 

“Professor Ellsworth always set the highest standards for himself and his students,” she said. “All aspects of his teaching, research and service were exemplary. He is one of the most knowledgeable landscape architects in the country in his specialty areas of visual resource analysis and simulation on public lands, and online distance education.”

 

“The LAEP department and the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences extend warm congratulations to John Ellsworth on this important milestone in his career and in the history of Utah State University,” said college Dean Gary Kiger. “This is a much-deserved honor.”

Landscape architecture is a comprehensive discipline of land analysis, planning, design, management, preservation and rehabilitation. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication and fellowship.
