Join Aggies in 'Painting the Town Purple' Oct. 11
Utah State University’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity are teaming with USU’s Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information office Wednesday, Oct. 11 to “paint the town purple” and raise awareness of domestic violence on campus and in the community.
The group invites people from campus and community to gather at 8 p.m. at the Alpha Chi Omega house, 693 N. 800 East, and join in tying purple ribbons in downtown Logan and along 700 North on the USU campus in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Doughnuts and hot chocolate will be served to participants.
Tying a purple ribbon around a tree is like tying a string around your finger, say gathering organizers.
“Putting ribbons around town helps everyone remember that domestic violence is a community-wide problem,” says Rachel Brighton, coordinator of USU’s SAAVI office. “Purple is the designated color for domestic violence awareness, and everyone needs to be aware and involved to help. A violence-free community is about all of us.”
Utah State’s SAAVI office provides crisis intervention for victims of sexual assault and violence, along with campus-wide educational programs. USU is the only higher ed campus in Utah with a full-time position devoted to sexual assault and violence prevention.
Brighton offers the following domestic violence prevention tips:
- If you are the victim of intimate-partner violence, talk with people you trust and seek services. Contact SAAVI at 797-1510, hotline 797-RAPE or Cache Valley’s Community Abuse Prevention Services Agency at 753-2500 for help.
- Recognize the early warning signs for physical violence such as a partner's extreme jealousy, controlling behavior, verbal threats, a history of violent tendencies or abusing others, and verbal or emotional abuse.
