Jean Yarbrough to deliver talk on Theodore Roosevelt March 18

Jean Yarbrough, a professor of government and legal studies at Bowdoin College, evaluates the legacy and political thought of Theodore Roosevelt at a public lecture March 18 at Utah State University.

Yarbrough’s talk, “Theodore Roosevelt and the American Founding,” veers from the traditional praise of the 26th president as a man of action, and instead, focuses on how he departed from the political principles of the country’s founders he admired most.

Yarbrough, the Gary M. Pendy, Sr. Professor of Social Sciences, is the author of Theodore Roosevelt and the American Political Tradition published in 2012.  She also wrote American Virtues: Thomas Jefferson on the Character of a Free People and edited The Essential Jefferson. She has published numerous articles and essays in American political thought and public policy and political philosophy. She serves on the editorial boards of The Review of Politics and Polity, and is past president of the New England Political Science Association.

The talk is sponsored by USU’s Department of Political Science and The Project on Liberty and American Constitutionalism. It will be held at 10:30 a.m. in Old Main, room 119.
