Interim President Smith Shares Message of Gratitude to Fellow Aggies

Editor's note: the following message was sent to all USU employees on Friday, Nov. 7, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

During my nine months serving Utah State University as interim president, I’ve been fortunate to observe your deep commitment, service orientation, and performance excellence. It has been humbling to work alongside you and to witness your accomplishments. Thank you for your student- and community-centered efforts – they have been impactful, forward-looking, and imbued with deep meaning. Your work matters.

Universities like ours, particularly those centered on a mission of access and opportunity, are irreplaceable and invaluable. They are critical to our collective well-being, the promise of our future, and the strength of our democracy. It has been an incredible honor to be entrusted with the leadership of USU. Thank you for your kindness and for bringing joy to our work together. I know that you will offer the same to President Mortensen as he assumes his term as our 18th president, and that our future is bright.

I have finally delivered on my promise of a short email. Thank you again, and peace out.

Sincerely,

Alan L. Smith
