In Memoriam

Two former members of the Utah State University family passed away this week, Max F. Dalby and Jeanne M. Hoover.

Dalby was a faculty member and former head of the Department of Music. In the early years of the Utah Symphony, he was a principal clarinetist. He taught music in a number of public schools before moving to higher education. He joined the faculty at Utah State in 1957 and served until his retirement in 1984. He was coordinator of music education, director of bands, department head, conductor of the Utah State Symphony Orchestra, co-founder and conductor of the Cache Chamber Orchestra and founder and conductor of the Utah State Alumni Band. He was honored by the university as “Alumnus of the Year” in 1994 and was the recipient of a “Distinguished Service Award.” The band room in the Chase Fine Arts Center is named in Dalby’s honor.

Contributions in Dalby’s memory can be given to the Max F. Dalby Endowment Fund in care of the Music Department at Utah State.

Hoover, a teacher, managed Utah State University’s Children House while completing a master’s degree in early childhood education. She later taught first grade in Lewiston, Utah. She was married to Bob Hoover, Utah State faculty member and dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Following a move to Reno, Nev., she taught first grade at Echo Loder School for five years. Supporting her husband’s endeavors and a move to the University of Idaho in 1996, she served as first lady. She was known as “a host extraordinaire” and befriended countless students. The Hoovers moved to Albertson College of Idaho in 2003, where she continued her role as hostess and devoted long hours to the community of Caldwell and to the college.

Contributions in Hoover’s memory can be made to the Jeanne M. Hoover Scholarship Endowment at Albertson College of Utah.
