Hurricane Katrina Updates/Information

Many Utah State University organizations and individuals are becoming involved in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Here is a roundup of activities in progress.

American West Heritage Center Hosts Benefit for Hurricane Katrina Survivors

The American West Heritage Center will host a Dutch oven dinner Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. to raise money for survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

The $25.95 fee includes dinner catered by Culinary Concepts, and horse-drawn wagon rides provided by Big Horse Adventures. More than 50 local businesses are donating items that will be put up at an auction and raffle during the evening. The American West Heritage Center site is affiliated with Utah State University.

100 percent of all proceeds benefit individuals and families most affected by the hurricane.

For reservations, call the American West Heritage Center at 435-245-6050. The center is located at 4025 S. Hwy 89-91 in Wellsville, just six miles south of Logan.

Faculty Member Recounts Experiences at Camp Williams

The aftermath of hurricane Katrina was brought closer to home as evacuees from Louisiana and Mississippi arrived in states across the country, including Utah.

Kelli Cargile Cook, an assistant professor in Utah State University's Department of English, and her husband, Robert, saw first hand the human impact of the disaster this past weekend as they worked at Camp Williams, checking evacuees into the camp.

Lynn Wright, the university's emergency management coordinator, has traveled to Houston with representatives from the Cache Valley chapter of the American Red Cross to assist with relief efforts there.

Hurricane Aftermath Affects Mail

Richard Boudrero, manager of USU's Central Distribution, said mail being sent to the southeast areas affected by hurricane Katrina is being returned. Campus departments and programs should be aware of delivery restrictions and suspensions established by the U.S. Postal Service.

Effective immediately, the Postal Service is not accepting any Standard Mail (letters and flats) or Periodicals Mail — from any source — addressed for delivery within the following three-digit ZIP Code ranges: 369, 393, 394, 395, 396, 700, 701 and 704.

This emergency action is a result of severe facility damage, evacuations and other issues resulting from hurricane Katrina.

USPS is now formulating plans to address the handling of Standard and Periodicals Mail already in the mailstream and addressed for delivery to these eight ZIP Code areas.
