Housing Overtaking Farms

The latest census indicates that about 10 percent of farmland in northern Utah has been lost to residential development over a five-year period. The state's average loss was 3 percent. USU sociologist Doug Jackson-Smith says states shouldn't postpone planning for development and preservation of farmland. Many states wait until it's too late to make a difference in maintaining agricultural land, he says.
