Housing and Residence Life Sponsors First-Ever Safety Week at USU

Utah State University’s Housing and Residence Life office is sponsoring the first-ever Safety Week on campus Sept. 11-14 with daily activities for all on-campus residents in all housing areas.

“Safety Week is an exciting new program dedicated to the security and well-being of USU housing residents,” said Rachel Fox, public relations and marketing manager for housing and resident life. “Some of the activities include fire-extinguisher training using real fire and life-like situations.”

 

Another activity focuses on alcohol safety awareness. Students put on beer goggles and undergo DUI simulations by driving a golf cart through an obstacle course of traffic cones. Additional topics that will be covered during Safety Week include DUI laws and fines, theft and identity theft, evacuation drills and safe, healthy dating and relationship seminars.

 

“One of the most important tools we can offer our students is the ability to protect themselves, so they can live safe, healthier lives,” said Whitney Milligan, director of residence life at USU.

 

A number of activities throughout the week will be coordinated by a variety of organizations, including the USU police, the fire marshal, SAAVI (Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information), and CAPSA (Community Abuse Prevention Services Agency). Safety Week is one of the many activities throughout the year planned by Residence Life that focuses on creating a safe community for USU residents.

 

“Educating our residents on safety-related issues also facilitates independent and self-assured students who are prepared for any situation that may arise, even when they graduate and head out into the real world,” Milligan said.
