Happiness, American Style
In her examination of the writings of Tom Wolfe, Utah State University political scientist Carol McNamara notes that Americans pursue status to achieve happiness. According to Wolfe, Americans attempt to gain status in a variety of ways but ultimately search for the ability to rise above or escape others' expectations.
