Guest Writers at Helicon West Open Mic

The next Helicon West open mic forum will feature guest writers Chris Cokinos, Michael Sowder and Charles Waugh, professors in the department of English at Utah State University.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Citrus and Sage (130 North 100 East) in Logan and everyone, university and community members alike, is invited to read up to seven minutes of creative work (poetry, fiction, non-fiction). Writers who wish to read should arrive early to sign up before the guest readers begin.

 

Helicon West is a program facilitated by Utah State University department of English faculty members Michael Sowder and Star Coulbrooke and supported by the department. The mission is to provide all writers, on campus and in the community, a venue to read or perform their works before a live audience, and to encourage all to write.

 

Cokinos teaches creative nonfiction writing and literature and is the author of “Hope is the Thing with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds.” He’s at work on a book about people who become obsessed with meteorites.

 

Sowder teaches poetry writing and American Literature in the English department. He is the author of the poetry collection “The Empty Boat” and of a critical study of Walt Whitman’s poetry titled, “Whitman’s Ecstatic Union.”

 

Waugh teaches fiction writing and literary and American studies courses in the English department. He recently earned a Rockefeller Fellowship to translate and edit a collection of Vietnamese fiction and nonfiction about the aftermath of Agent Orange.
