Great Basin Basketry: Interpretation in Spanish at Museum of Anthropology

Utah State University’s Museum of Anthropology is holding its second Spanish language event of the year Saturday, April 24, with presentations at 1, 2, and 3 p.m.

 

“The last event was such a hit that we are very excited to do this again for the Spanish-speaking community of Cache Valley,” said museum curator and USU professor Mary Kay Gabriel.

 

Ashley Smith, USU student and Saturday program planner, described the Saturday activity.

 

“Guests will learn about Native American basket-making techniques of the Great Basin,” she said. “They can create their own basket to take home.”

 

The event showcases the museum’s bilingual team and its efforts to produce Spanish and English audio tours, Gabriel said. In addition to the basket-making activity, there will be light refreshments and a free raffle for prizes. The museum thanks several businesses for their generous donations, including Pita Pit, Planet Beach, Ruby Tuesday and Panda Express.

 

USU students and members of the public, with a special invitation to the area’s Spanish-speaking community, are invited to the Saturday activity. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Funding for Saturday events is provided by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Museum of Anthropology is a part of the Anthropology Program at USU. The museum is open six days a week, with regular hours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free.
