Governor Huntsman Declares USU Extension Week

Utah Gov. Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., declared the week of Sept. 9-15 as Utah State University Cooperative Extension Week.

“In light of the 100-year anniversary of Extension this year, we are pleased that Governor Huntsman recognizes Utah State University Extension as an important asset to the state,” said Noelle Cockett, vice president and dean for USU Extension and agriculture. “Extension is as vital and vibrant today as it was in 1907, and we appreciate the governor acknowledging our legacy through this declaration.”

 

USU Extension has offices in 28 counties in Utah and provides educational resources and programs throughout the state in agriculture, horticulture, 4-H and youth, families and communities, food and nutrition, finance and economics, entrepreneursism, economic development and natural resources.

 

Huntsman’s declaration states that Extension is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Utahns by responding to diverse issues with research-based, non-biased information and to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of individuals, families and communities.

 

“It’s exciting to be a part of an organization that has been dedicated to the citizens of Utah for 100 years,” said Chuck Gay, associate vice president for USU Extension.

 

In recognition of the anniversary, USU Extension has released a 64-page centennial publication both online and in hard copy. The publication intermingles Extension history and photographs with information about today’s programs. Items for a time capsule, made of representative materials from every county in the state, have been gathered throughout the year.

 

The celebration will continue at the Utah State Fair Sept. 6-16, where Extension sponsors a 100-year booth in the 4-H Building. To celebrate the centennial of Extension, a new flavor of Aggie ice cream, Blue Ribbon Raspberry Crème, was produced.
