Gone With The Wind

Strong, localized wind gusts called microbursts can erupt from unimpressive storms and cause significant damage, says USU professor Larry Hipps. These unpredictable downdrafts result from thundershowers, where cold, sinking air hits the ground and spreads at high velocity. Because they endanger aircraft, most large airports employ Doppler Radar to monitor their occurrence, he says.
