Go to the Movies with USU Wind Orchestra
The Utah State University Wind Orchestra presents “Movie Night” Friday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall, located in the Chase Fine Arts Center on the USU Logan campus.
“Our guest artist is Bridger Burt, one of the Music Department’s stand-out musicians during his tenure as a student,” said Tom Rohrer, associate professor in the Caine College of the Arts.
This year, the annual spring concert by the USU Wind Orchestra celebrates music used in movies. Many selections on the program will be familiar to film fans.
The Wind Orchestra will perform Symphony No. 6 by Vincent Persichetti, the “Finale” of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and Tuba Concerto by Edward Gregson, among other works. One of the main pieces to be performed is Sinfonia Sacra by Floyd Werle, a former United States Air Force Band arranger. The piece is best described as a psychedelic one-of-a-kind work, Rohrer said. Besides the traditional wind ensemble, Sinfonia Sacra calls for a rock band, Salvation Army Band, recorded tape and a narrator.
The USU Wind Orchestra is composed of 45 wind and percussion students. The orchestra is known for its repertoire of both contemporary wind music as well as time-tested standards from band music. This orchestra is the most exclusive of the USU Bands and students must audition at the beginning of each semester.
