Geology Department Receives $5,000 from ExxonMobil
The Geology Department at Utah State University is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from ExxonMobil. The department received the grant as part of a program that donates more than $1.6 million in grants to 86 colleges and universities.
“This grant is important to our program because it allows us to support students — both graduate and undergraduate — in ways that we could not do with our normal resources,” said Department Head and professor John Shervais.
Selected academic departments specifically allocate grants for educational purposes, including scholarships, field trips, visiting speakers, equipment purchases, student and faculty travel to professional meetings and other academic projects.
“The grant is used to benefit the academic success of students in the geology program at Utah State,” Shervais said.
ExxonMobil awards departmental grants to educational institutions offering degrees in disciplines from which the company recruits employees. The award was presented at Utah State during a recruiting session held by ExxonMobil earlier this fall.
“ExxonMobil remains a strong proponent of higher education and continues to uphold its commitment to support academic initiatives that increase the skill level and number of qualified graduates entering tomorrow’s workforce,” said Ed Price, U.S. recruiting manager for ExxonMobil. “This program enables university department chairs the flexibility to earmark funds for their greatest needs.”
The funding benefits Utah State in a number of ways, Shervais said.
“It enriches the experience of our students by allowing them to attend professional meetings and participate in world-class field excursions,” he said. “It involves undergraduates in research and allows us to present the viewpoints of faculty from around the country.”
