Gay-Themed Movie Musical Shown at USU

In the tradition of such movie-musical phenomenon as High School Musical and Mamma Mia, a critically acclaimed, independent, gay-themed film will be presented on the campus of Utah State University.

Were the World Mine will be presented by USU’s Gay Lesbian Bisexual Trans and Allied Services. The film is said to be an intoxicating story of a misfit gay teen who obtains a love potion and is able to alter his dreary high school reality by turning the residents of his narrow-minded town gay. Directed by Tom Gustafson, the inspiration for the film can be attributed to his own high school experience.

 

The USU screening of Were the World Mine begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at the Taggart Student Center Auditorium. Admission is $5.

 

“I am excited that we have the opportunity to present this film to Utah State and the community,” said Maure Smith, USU GLBT services program coordinator. “Independent film, especially queer independent film, promotes empathy and understanding of different experiences and ways of life.”

 

This cinematic experience has also received recognition for its artistic visuals and musicality. It is has become a New York Times “Critics’ Pick” and has won the Outfest Heineken Red Star Awards Grand Jury Prize for best U.S. Narrative. Were the World Mine has been honored at more than 25 of the nation’s top film festivals and received critical acclaim in the nation’s top publications.

 

“I think that this film will be an exciting event for the entire student body,” said Paul Jansen, president of the USU Pride! Alliance. “I hope the students and the community come out to learn and share in the GLBT experience.”
